Exodus 20:12 ~ “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
If only I had grasped this concept earlier, just maybe this journey could’ve been a bit smoother.
“I hate when mom wakes me up super early to go to the market. I be tired as hell in the morning, I don’t feel like leaving the damn house! But I won’t disobey my mother” This is the comment my dad, my 40 year old father made about his mom. I was shocked. I was disappointed. Shocked a 40 year old man would still obey his mother as if he was a 10 year old boy. I was disappointed in myself, because at the age of 20 I’ve done nothing but disobey my own mother.
If I don’t believe any other verse in the bible, Exodus 20:12 will always be kept in my heart until my parents leave this world. I didn’t understand it then, but I get it now. If God is our father (Parent) and we wouldn’t disobey God, then why would it be okay to disobey and dishonor our birth mother and father? It’s a matter of respect, period.
